Boat emergency basics

What to do now

  1. 1Lifejackets on before trouble, not during it; kill-cord attached whenever the engine runs.
  2. 2Man overboard: shout, point continuously, throw a buoyant aid, turn back, engine in neutral for recovery.
  3. 3Call 112 or a Mayday on VHF Channel 16 with position, people aboard and problem.
  4. 4Capsize: stay with the boat — it is visible and buoyant. Count everyone out loud.
  5. 5Flooding: stop the ingress if you can, pump or bail, and head for the nearest safe shore.

Do not

  1. 1Do not swim for shore from a floating boat.
  2. 2Do not restart an engine with someone in the water nearby.
  3. 3Do not leave the harbour without telling someone your plan and return time.

Seek urgent help if

  1. 1Anyone in the water, any flooding, fire, or loss of steering or power offshore.
  2. 2Cold water immersion of any length.

Aftercare

  1. 1Service the engine and check safety kit before the next trip.
  2. 2Debrief with the crew and update your float plan.
